Gatorade: The Lie for Athletes

Everybody knows about Gatorade, the sports drink that makes those awesome water bottles that everyone has in those inspiring commercials.  But most of all everyone knows about the drink that you see everyone drinking, whether they play a sport or not!

Hate to break it to you, but that drink is doing more harm to your body than good.  Next time you go to pick up a Gatorade, flip it over and take a look at the nutrition facts on the back.

1)  Look for the sugar label.  In the label above, this drink contains 14g of sugar.  I don't know about you, but I think that's a lot of sugar to be putting into your body at once, and its not the normal sugar used for putting in your coffee.  This sugar is sucrose syrups.  So think liquefied empty calories, and glucose-fructose, and in other words, very bad for you!  This is also where the supposed energy boost comes from.  By putting lots of sugars into your body you might increase your energy level, but trust me, you'll feel worse after that game once you've crashed.

2)  Artificial flavors are bad!  I know drinking something to be flavored like a fruit might taste better but its basically chemicals added to make the drink flavored.  This can be very harmful to your body.

3)  Citric Acids are also in this drink and studies have shown that these acids are the number one cause of tooth decay.  Yuck.

4)  Toxic dyes!  Trust me, that nice fun color is definitely not natural and for sure not healthy.  There are many different dyes to watch out for but the most common ones found in Gatorade are Yellow 5, Yellow 6 and Red 40 artificial dyes.  The dye Yellow 5 was found to be linked to asthma and is often the cause of it.

So all in all, Gatorade really isn't a healthy sports drink.  It causes more harm to your body than good and consists of chemicals and sugars.  There are many other healthy alternatives to Gatorade, but you should always check out the label before drinking anything claiming to give you an energy boost or re-hydrate you.

I hope you this post helped you out!
